Take these activities on your next trip.  They'll make the ride go faster and your children might learn a little too!

Car Activity Box
It is always a good idea to bring an Activity Box with you on your car trip.  Here are some items you may want to keep in the box:

 Paper- colored and plain

Markers
Pens and pencils
Colored pencils
Deck of cards
Tape
Small notebook

These items will fit in a shoebox or cigar box and stored under the seat.

Hint:

Avoid bringing crayons.  The hot sun can melt them.  The children will not be able to use the crayons and you risk having them stain the car’s upholstery.

The Alphabet Game

You need:

One or more players

 Directions:

1.      Looking out of the window, search license plates and signs to find the letters of the alphabet.  Start with A and continue consecutively until you have reached Z.

2.      Try playing the alphabet game by finding objects that start with each letter of the alphabet.  Call the objects out as you see them.

3.      Both types of the alphabet game can be played alone, or with other players.  If you play alone, time yourself.  If you play with other people, there are a variety of ways you can compete.  For example: The first person to see a letter calls it out and tells where they saw the letter.  All other players must look for the same letter in a different place.  The first person to reach the end of the alphabet wins the game.  Also try working as a group to build the alphabet.

Fifty States

You need:

One or more players

Pencil or pen

Paper

Directions:

1.      Look at the license plates on the other cars on the road.  As you see the plates from different states, write them down on paper to keep track.

2.      During the course of your trip, see how many of the states you can find.

For added fun – try to remember the capital of each state you find.  Do you know that state’s flower or bird?

Twenty Questions

You need:

2 or more players

 1.      To begin the game, the player who is “it” thinks of a person, place or thing and tells the other players what category it falls into.

2.      To play, the other players take turns by asking questions that require a “yes” or “no” response.  The players continue on with their turn until they get a “no”.  Then the next player takes a turn.

3.      The object is to guess what the person who is “it” is thinking before Twenty Questions are asked.  The player who guesses is “it” on the next round.

First Laugh

You need:

Two players

Directions:

 1.      With out touching the other person, try to make silly faces and gestures to make them laugh.

2.      When they finally breakdown and laugh, switch roles.  Try keeping time to see who is the fastest at making the other laugh.
