Pop Goes the Weasel - Pop Rockets  
Supplies: Clean, Dry 35 MM Fuji Film Canisters
Alka Seltzer Tablets
Tap Water

 

Fill the film canisters 1/4 full with water.  Place 1/4 tablet Alka Seltzer into canister.  Close cap securely and turn over canister.
Stand Back—Watch what happens.

Answer: The canister will shoot into the air.  (Adult Supervision Required.)

For 4th of July, decorate canisters with patriotic stickers (stars and strips) and place on a decorated white paper plate.  Create your own Independence Day celebration show.

 


 

Ocean Globe - Create a Miniature Ocean  
Supplies: Baby Food Jar & Lid or Small Wide Mouth Jar & Lid
Sand
Water
Small Sea Shells
Glue (optional)
Small Paint Brush (optional)
Blue Food Coloring 

 

Fill jar approximately 1/4 full with sand using coffee scoop or teaspoon.  Add food coloring to water in a separate container to give a "Bermuda" blue color to water.  Add water to jar, leaving small air bubble at top.  Invite your child to place seashells in jar, then put lid on jar.  Optional-Using brush, apply glue to threads of jar, close lid, and let dry for 30 minutes.  Ask your child what will happen when you swirl the globe.

 


 

Flower Coloring - Prove Flowers Draw Water Up their Stem
Supplies: Vase
Long Stem White Flowers (Queen Anne's Lace, Daisies,
      or Carnations)
Food Coloring
Water 

 

Snip off ends of flower stems.  Put water and flowers in vase, add food coloring.  Within about 12 hours the flowers will turn the color of the food coloring.  Each day cut the ends and the color will become more pronounced.  Experiment with different colors or mixing colors together and see what happens.
